Be the Heart of The Compass Project
Compass Project relies on committed, energetic, and caring volunteers to serve as positive role models for our program participants. The boat shop is a minds-on, hands-on environment where we encourage everyone to share their unique experiences, skills and talents in a mentorship capacity. If you value experiential learning, playing a meaningful role in a young person’s development, and the importance of teamwork, Compass Project is the place for you. As a volunteer you will have numerous opportunities for engagement and encourage you to bring and share your own personal interests. Boatbuilding experience is helpful but not required. However, you must love working with kids, be a positive role model, and want to be part of a team that is dedicated to serving each and every student that we have the privilege of working with.
Volunteer Opportunities include:
Work directly with a youth boat building group where you will assist instructors with boat building classes and work with a individual or small groups of students with hands-on projects.
Help prep for projects, upcoming classes, perform boat and tool maintenance, and provide behind general behind the scenes shop support. Shop volunteers work with guidance from staff and ideally have some experience in a shop environment, or with woodworking and hand and power tools. The ability to work fairly independently is important.
We celebrate our students’ accomplishments with time on the water. Students get to enjoy the fruits of their hard work by rowing their newly completed boats and learning about waterfront activities. For many of our students, this will be their first time in a boat. We teach general boating safety, rowing techniques, use of charts and navigation, and most importantly, teamwork. If you are comfortable being on the water and are interested in joining us, we’ll find a place for you.
