Compass Project Announces Adult Education Classes – Fall 2013
In collaboration with Portland Adult Education, Compass Project is pleased to offer two Fall semester classes, starting the week of September 9th. Adult education is a new venture for Compass Project. We hope that by opening the shop to more constituencies that we will attract new volunteers and supporters to help fulfill our mission of using boat building and rowing to reach at risk youth.
Build Your Own Stand Up Paddleboard will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m for eight weeks. Stand-Up Paddleboards (SUPs) are an amazing way to interact with salt and freshwater environments while getting a great workout. Instructor Shane Hall will introduce students to stich-and-glue construction techniques using pre-cut marine plywood parts, epoxy and fiberglass. At the conclusion of the course, each student will bring home a completed board, ready for finish work. The Matt Barton-designed SUP was created just for Compass Project. Tuition, including all materials is $2050.00.
Wendy West will teach Women’s Woodworking: A Primer on Mondays from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. In a comfortable and supportive environment, Wendy will present woodworking terminology, techniques, and the safe use of a full array of hand and power tools. Each student will gain the practical knowledge and skills needed to complete one project, a simple Shaker-inspired bookcase. Students will leave the program with confidence, understanding, and appreciation for working with wood, along with a piece of furniture they have built themselves. The class begins Sept 10 and will run for 10 weeks. Tuition is $400.00; materials will cost an additional $75 or less.
